The right outfit can make the difference between a headshot you tolerate and one you're proud to put on LinkedIn, your company website or your next speaker bio. As a Savannah headshot photographer, I get asked "What should I wear?" before almost every session. Here's the short answer, plus the details that make a big difference on camera.
1. Choose Solid Colors
Solid colors keep the attention on your face. Small checks, thin stripes and busy patterns can create a distracting shimmer on camera, so save them for another day. Rich mid-tones like navy, charcoal, burgundy, forest green and soft blue flatter almost every skin tone.
2. Dress One Step Above Your Everyday Work Look
Your headshot should look like you on a good day at work. If you wear a suit to the office, wear the suit. If your workplace is business casual, a blazer over a simple top or an open-collar shirt is perfect. Actors and creatives can go more relaxed, but keep it clean and intentional.
3. Mind the Neckline
A headshot is cropped close, so the neckline does a lot of work. V-necks and open collars lengthen the neck and frame the face. Avoid very low necklines or anything that makes you look bare-shouldered when cropped tight.
4. Make Sure It Fits
Fit matters more than brand. A jacket that pulls across the shoulders or a collar that gaps will show up in the photo. Bring clothes that fit well today, and steam or press them the night before.
5. Keep Accessories Simple
Small earrings, a simple necklace or a watch are great. Large statement jewelry and shiny pieces can steal attention from your face. If you wear glasses every day, bring them. We can angle them to reduce glare.
6. Bring Options
Bring two or three tops or jackets in different colors. We'll look at them against the backdrop and pick what works best for your skin tone and your brand. A second outfit also gives you variety for different platforms.
Quick Checklist for Your Session
Two or three outfits on hangers, pressed or steamed
Solid colors, nothing too bright or too busy
Lint roller and a comb or brush

A clean shave or a freshly trimmed beard
Glasses, if you wear them daily
