What to Wear for Family Photos in Savannah

"What should we wear?" is the number one question families ask me before a session, and it's a good one. The right outfits make your photos feel timeless, keep the focus on your faces and help everyone feel comfortable enough to relax. Here's my simple, Savannah-specific guide to dressing the whole family.

1. Coordinate, Don't Match

Matching white shirts and jeans can make photos look dated fast. Instead, choose a palette of two or three main colors plus one or two neutrals, and let each person wear a different mix. The family should look like they belong together, not like they're wearing a uniform.

2. Start with One Outfit

Pick the hardest person to dress first, often Mom's dress or a toddler's favorite outfit, and build the palette from it. A dress or shirt with a subtle pattern is a great starting point: pull two or three colors from the pattern and dress everyone else in solids that echo it.

3. Easy Palettes That Always Work

  • Earthy: rust, mustard and olive with cream or denim

  • Soft neutral: cream, tan and sage green

  • Coastal: dusty blue, white and sand

  • Classic: navy, burgundy and gray

Let one or two people wear a gentle pattern, like a soft floral, small plaid or thin stripe, while everyone else stays in solids. Texture, like knits, linen or corduroy, adds richness without adding clutter.

4. Dress for Savannah's Weather

Savannah is warm and humid for much of the year, and comfortable families make for happier photos.

  • Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for outdoor sessions. Light layers like a cardigan, denim jacket or light sweater add depth to photos.

  • Summer calls for breathable fabrics like linen and cotton, and lighter colors that won't show heat. I schedule summer sessions close to sunset, when it's cooler and the light is softer.

  • Winter is mild, so this is the time for rich colors like burgundy, emerald and navy and cozy textures.

5. Match Your Outfits to the Location

Your setting should complement your clothes, not compete with them. Greens and earth tones glow under the live oaks and Spanish moss of Forsyth Park and the squares. Soft whites, blues and sandy neutrals look beautiful on Tybee Island's beach. Rich jewel tones pop against the brick and ironwork of the Historic District.

6. What to Avoid

  • Neon and very bright colors that cast color onto faces

  • Big logos, characters and text on shirts

  • Tiny, busy patterns that can shimmer on camera

  • Mixing very formal and very casual looks in the same family

  • Brand-new shoes nobody has broken in

7. Comfort Is Everything

Have everyone try on their outfits a few days before the session, especially the kids. Make sure they can sit, kneel, walk and get picked up comfortably. Pack wipes, a hairbrush, snacks and a backup outfit for little ones. Comfortable kids are happy kids, and happy kids make the best photos.
