Savannah might be the most photogenic city in the South. Live oaks draped in Spanish moss, historic squares, cobblestone streets and golden marsh light make it a dream backdrop for engagement photos. As a Savannah wedding and portrait photographer, here are my favorite spots, plus a few tips to help your session go smoothly.
1. Forsyth Park
The classic. The white fountain is iconic, but the real magic is in the shaded walkways under the oaks, where the light stays soft even in the afternoon. Go early on a weekday to avoid crowds around the fountain. Best for: timeless, romantic portraits with a touch of grandeur.
2. The Historic Squares
Savannah's squares each have their own personality: ironwork, fountains, monuments and brick paths. Because they're small and spread throughout the Historic District, you can walk between two or three in a single session for real variety. Best for: couples who want an elegant, old-Savannah feel.
3. Wormsloe Historic Site
The famous oak-lined avenue at Wormsloe is one of the most photographed drives in Georgia, and for good reason. Wormsloe charges admission and has its own photography rules and permit, so check current requirements with the site before you book. Best for: a dramatic, cinematic look.
4. River Street and Factors Walk
Cobblestones, old cotton warehouses, iron bridges and the Savannah River give you texture and character. It gets busy with visitors, so early morning is your friend. Best for: urban, editorial and playful sessions.
5. Tybee Island
About 30 minutes from downtown, Tybee gives you wide-open beach, dunes, the pier and incredible sunsets. Bring a blanket and plan around the tide and wind. Best for: relaxed, natural sessions and barefoot-in-the-sand couples.
6. Jones Street and the Historic District Lanes
Often called one of the prettiest streets in America, Jones Street is lined with brick townhomes, ironwork stoops and arching oaks. Please be respectful of the residents who live there. Best for: candid, walking-together moments.
7. The Marsh at Golden Hour
The Lowcountry marsh turns gold and pink as the sun goes down, and it's quieter than downtown. Spots along the routes toward Tybee or Skidaway Island offer big skies and soft, glowing light. Best for: moody, painterly portraits.
Tips for a Great Engagement Session in Savannah
Time it for golden hour. The hour before sunset gives you the most flattering light and cooler temperatures.
Plan for the weather. Savannah summers are hot and humid. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, and I always keep a backup date in mind.
Coordinate, don't match. Pick two or three complementary colors and avoid busy logos or small patterns.
Bring a second outfit. A dressy look and a casual look give you more variety from one session.
Check permits for your location. Small personal sessions are usually fine in public parks, but some sites, like Wormsloe, have their own rules and fees.
